about

The Zapatista Solidarity Network consists of individuals and collectives that came together to support the Zapatista Journey for Life across Slumil K’ajxemk’op (or the Insubordinate Land formerly known as Europe) in 2021.

Responding to the Declaration for Life that the Zapatistas launched in October 2020, announcing their intention to tour the five continents, individuals and collectives from different territories across Insubordinate Land joined efforts to organise the Zapatista journey in our geographies. The collective work done at the continental level gave form to the platform Viaje por la Vida, of which we are part.

In the territories of Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and England people came together in different ways to celebrate and respond to this call. After a few months of intense work, the Zapatista Solidarity Network was born in the summer of 2021, coordinating the visit of 11 members of the Zapatista communities to our territories between October 12th and November 5th, 2021. Our encounters with the Zapatistas are documented in our newsletter.

Following the Zapatista Journey for Life, some people and collectives from different regions across the UK decided to continue working together with the aim of standing in solidarity with, and learning from, the Zapatista movement and their struggle for freedom and autonomy. We also aim at creating links to social movements and campaigns in our own territories and internationally, supporting all struggles for a better world. Our network is currently formed by individuals and collectives in Scotland and England. Check out our local regions and groups. Everyone is welcome to join or to get a local group organised. Get involved!

As Zapatista Solidarity Network we have pledged to continue raising funds to support the Zapatista communities in resistance, struggles linked to the National Indigenous Congress of Mexico as well as other local forms of resistance.

If you’re interested in finding out more about the Zapatista movement and our work, follow our blog and check out our resources to learn more about Zapatismo and our own work and practice.

support us

★ organising. There are many ways in which you can support our work, whether by co-organising an event to raise awareness about the Zapatista struggle and other resistances or by bringing new ideas and projects to this network! Get in touch!

★ raising awareness. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and help us spread the news about the Zapatista struggle far and wide. We circulate the Zapatista communiqués, petitions and other campaigns casting light on the current situation in the communities in resistance.

★ fundraising. Following the success of our crowdfunder campaign to cover the costs of the Zapatista visit to our territories, we have pledged to continue raising funds for the Zapatista and other communities in resistance.

Our Southeast section continues rising funds by bringing rebellious goods to different events, including amazing crafts made in Chiapas. You can also visit their Teemill shop and grab posters, stickers, tote bags and other items featuring designs kindly donated by Mexican artists Juan Panadero, Gran OM and Maldito Perrito, and the brilliant artists from Ireland V’Cenza Cirefice and Kate O’Shea.
