Dear Friends,
It is with deep sadness that we share a statement from Claudia Uruchurtu’s family, issued in response to the recent judicial decision to release the main suspect in Claudia’s disappearance in 2021.
This decision, handed down by a judge from the Superior Court in Oaxaca, has sparked widespread criticism and indignation on social media.
Claudia disappeared in March 2021 while attending a public demonstration. At the time, Lizbeth Victoria Huerta, then serving as Municipal President, was identified as the intellectual author of her disappearance. This led to Huerta’s detention and four years of preventive imprisonment. However, her recent release has ignited outrage—not only because of the reversal of her sentence but also for what it represents regarding the pervasive state of impunity in Mexico.
In the Zapatista Solidarity Network, we share our outrage with Claudia’s family and demand justice for her and the more than 100,000 disappeared people in Mexico.
Below we share a report by Rafael Lozano on Claudia’s disappearance (in English) and the recent communiqué from her family (in Spanish).
